Reading & Writing Notebooks Week - Friday

I {heart} using notebooks in my classroom!

I am ending reading & writing notebook week with some miscellaneous activities.
a letter sort...
parts of a book...
rhyming...
word families during Seuss week...
special memories writing ideas...
I got these vowel sorts from First Grade a la carte...
We never use glue in our notebooks. The pictures above were taped in. I also never let them use markers because they bleed through the pages. We use crayons or colored pencils. I use lots of different sizes of labels to put info at the top of the pages.
Happy Notebooking!!

  1. Thank you for these great posts on your notebooks! When I taught first grade I used one large notebook and we called it our "thinking books". I am now inspired to use one again in kindergarten. Do the students add the labels? How do you get them passed out quickly? Thank you so much!

    1. I usually add the labels. Sometimes I have them find the next blank page and I walk around and put the label in, but most of the time I open all of the notebooks to the next blank page in a stack and go through and put the labels in. It really doesn't take that much time. At the end of the year I have them write their own titles at the top. My students sit at tables, so when I collect them I keep the table groups together in the stack, keep them in that same order when I put the labels in so they are ready to pass out the next time. If they get mixed up, I pass them out as we leave group time.

  3. I know you said that you that you tape in the pictures. But I was wondering is your notebook blank because I don't see any lines on the examples? So do you hand students a blank sheet of paper with the label on top, have them complete it, then tape it into their notebook? Thanks for the help.

  4. Thanks for the great response to my question Jonelle.
I was thinking to do it the same way. My parent volunteers and our 5th grade helpers could do it too.
I'm excited to try this type of learning journals. Would you consider selling the sight word poems on the labels? I would surely buy them! Thanks again!

  5. OH MY!!!!! I am loving your journal ideas - thank you SO much for sharing your great work!!! Love all the samples as well. My brain is in full speed right now thinking of how to implement this in MY classroom!!!! We did not ask for more than one composition book, as my colleagues do not do as much writing as I do... wish we had now...pooey... I still have a idea and plan on using your ideas - thank you SO very much!! :)

  6. I LOVE your ideas. I often get "lazy" with notebooks, because I am not always sure how to "check" work. It's kind of a big deal to collect all the notebooks and check work. Do you have a system that works for you??

    1. I collect them and keep them organized by tables. sometime I even have my students stack them at the end of the table open to the next page so that they are ready to put the next sticker in.

  7. I absolutely love this idea. I am a 26 year veteran and will give this a first try in my kindergarten class. A few questions: Is it necessary to have different notebooks for subjects? At the very beginning of the year, what might the first few pages look like?
Can't wait to try this out,

  8. Also, would you recommend just starting off with a one subject notebook and making sure it is done correctly or go for it and create several?
    Thanks,

    1. The first year that I did notebooks I did 2...a math notebook and a science notebook. This year I added the reading and writing notebook. You might think about starting with just the science or the math to see how it goes and how it fits into your schedule. I would start with a science notebook because it is the easiest to add to your day. I use my math notebook as review or assessment at the end of each math unit, during the unit we do a lot of hands on activities. Hope this helps.

  12. Jonelle...I really appreciate the photos of your students' reading journals. My question is how much support are you providing? Are you doing these on chart paper or the ELMO and then letting the children copy them (with their own drawings) or are you modeling and then they do it all themselves? It's not you I'm questioning; this is a question my team is throwing around now with the CCSS. I would really appreciate your input....thanks!

    1. The amount of support differs depending on the activity. Some we do together on the Smartboard and they record it in their notebook, for some things I use visuals or books and they choose what they want to record and for some things we create a chart or list together and then they choose what they want to record. I also let me class dictate how much support and modeling that they need. I do a lot of drawing in my class, so the drawings are their own. I start my writing workshop every year with a drawing unit that builds their skills and confidence. Hope this helps.
